In the Lakes and looking for some cool mountain biking spots? Look no further. Easily accessible from both Keswick and Cockermouth, Whinlatter Forest offers some of the best mountain biking in England with a mixture of challenging and beginner friendly trails.
There are three main trails within the forest: the Altura Trail, the Quercus Trail, and the Gorse Trail.
Altura Trail: For those seeking a thrilling ride, the Altura Trail is a must-try. This red-grade trail spans over 19 kilometers (12 miles) and is split into two loops, offering a challenge for more experienced riders. The trail ascends high into the forest, providing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Expect technical descents, sharp switchbacks, and really fun fast-flowing berm sections.
Quercus Trail: If you’re new to mountain biking or looking for a more leisurely ride, the Quercus Trail is the perfect choice. This blue-grade trail is around 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) long and is designed to be accessible to riders of all abilities. It offers a gentle introduction to the sport with its smooth, flowing sections and gradual climbs. The trail winds through the lush forest, offering glimpses of the surrounding fells and valleys. It’s an ideal option for families or anyone looking to enjoy a more relaxed ride.
Gorse Trail: This trail is another blue-grade option, shorter and more compact than the Quercus but still offering a fantastic ride through the forest. With a mix of natural and man-made features, it’s a great way to build confidence and improve your riding skills.
Whichever you opt for, there are amazing views the whole way.
The on-site bike hire shop offers a range of high-quality mountain bikes for rent, so you don’t need to worry about bringing your own equipment. I hired this cool Nukeproof full suspension bike I’d highly recommend!
The visitor center provides maps, trail information and advice. Theres also a nice cafe offering a selection of hot meals, snacks, and drinks.
