If you’re in Tasmania and you’re looking for both a challenge and the best view of the iconic Wineglass Bay, the Mount Amos hike is for you.
This hike was one of my favourites in Tasmania; short, steep and requiring a fair bit of scrambling, this hike will reward you with amazing views when you reach the summit.
-
- Distance: ~4 km return
-
- Time: 3–4 hours
-
- Difficulty: Hard
-
- This hike should only be attempted in dry, calm conditions. The granite slabs are extremely slippery when wet, and safety always comes first.
Mount Amos is located in Freycinet National Park on Tasmania’s East Coast, near to Coles Bay. The hike starts from the car park at the bottom of the trailhead, where you can find toilets and drinking water. The car park services multiple hikes that start from the same location and can get fairly busy, particularly in the summer months, so I would recommend getting there early!
You will need a Parks Pass to park – these can be bought from the parks website.

The Ascent
One you’ve parked up, the start of the trail is easy to find. The trail begins quite gently but quickly turns steep into a scramble up granite slabs. The trail is marked by yellow arrows, so it’s easy to navigate. Make sure to look back as you climb up and the amazing views start to appear!

The Summit
At the summit you will be rewarded with an incredible sweeping view of Wineglass Bay with its white sand beaches and crystal blue waters.

The Descent
Take your time on the descent, the smooth, steep rocks can be slippery and its best to try and keep three points of contact on the rock.
Top Tips
-
- Make sure to check the weather before you set out and avoid wet or windy conditions.
-
- Wear hiking boots or trail shoes with sufficient grip on them.
-
- Pack food, water and layers. There is little shade and the weather can turn quickly.
Mt Amos is a short, challenging hike with amazing views and definitely worth the scramble up there on a sunny day!
