What to pack for a day hike.

You’ve picked the route, you’ve checked the weather, now it’s time to pack your bag and you have no idea where to start. We’ve all been there, frantically running around minutes before you’re due to leave the house, hoping you haven’t forgotten anything.

I’ve put together a list of 20 must pack items for any day hike, be it 30 km through the mountains or 5 km through the local woods, so that you won’t forgot any of the essentials again.

  1. Backpack: probably an obvious one here but you’ll need a decent sized backpack for any day hike (20-30 litres should suffice). Look for comfortable, adjustable shoulder, chest and hip straps.
  2. Waterproof cover for your backpack: even if your backpack is waterproof, a cover can provide extra protection in wet weather.
  3. Map: whether it’s a physical map or GPS-based app, make sure to carry a map to know where you’re going!
  4. Hiking boots or shoes: waterproof, durable boots with ankle support, or trail running trainers. Make sure to break them in beforehand to avoid blisters.
  5. Socks: wear a pair of moisture-wicking, cushioned socks and consider packing a spare pair.
  6. Water: Carry 1-2 litres of water in a water bottle or hydration pack. A metal bottle will keep water cooler for longer.
  7. Food: bring a packed lunch and plenty of lightweight, high energy snacks like trail mix and energy bars.
  8. Sun protection: sunglasses, a hat and suncream, you never know how the weather will turn out!
  9. First aid kid: in case of any emergencies, make sure you have bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister plasters and pain relief to hand.
  10. Layers: pack a fleece, gilet or down jacket for warmth.
  11. Waterproofs: the weather in the UK can never be trusted, make sure to pack a waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers.
  12. Hat and gloves: if it’s due to be chilly or you’re hiking to high altitudes, don’t forget a hat and gloves.
  13. Insect repellent: that woodland walk is great until you’re swarmed with mosquitos!
  14. Hand sanitiser: essential for all cleaning purposes before eating that packed lunch!
  15. Phone and battery pack: you’ll need your phone to capture photos of all the amazing views, and to call for help should you need it.
  16. Battery pack: a battery pack is essential to ensure you’ve got enough battery!
  17. Whistle for emergencies: in case something should happen, have a whistle to hand to draw attention to yourself. Many backpacks come with whistles integrated into the strap.
  18. Torch: In case of being out beyond sunset for any reason.
  19. Hiking poles: a personal preference, but hiking poles can be really helpful for steep inclines and descents.
  20. Toiletries: Most trails don’t have toilets, so pack tissues and don’t forget to take everything with you and leave no trace.

Now you’ve got a packing list, you can focus on getting out and enjoying the views, fresh air and adventures.
